The True Meaning of Brotherhood

Jewish tradition tells the story of two brothers who lived long ago in ancient Jerusalem. One brother was very rich with many children. The other brother was very poor without a family. Both of them were farmers. One evening, both brothers had a powerful dream. The wealthy brother dreamt that his brother was starving. Times were tough and he had no children to help him around the farm. The poor brother meanwhile dreamt that his brother was going through a rough time. The crops were failing and he had many mouths to feed. With a start each brother woke and decided that their dream was a sign from God and that they needed to do something right away. Unbeknown to each other they gathered up a sack full of food and left their farm and began to travel to the other brother’s farm. In the darkness of the night they literally ran into each other and stumbled to the ground. Coming quickly to their senses each brother realized what the other intended to do and they hugged each other and delighted in the generosity and caring of their family. A tear of joy ran down the cheek of each brother, merging as the tears touched the rich earth, forming a sacred seed of love. Tradition teaches that God decreed that at that very spot the Temple in Jerusalem would be built.

I love this story because it reminds us of the fundamental values of Judaism: brotherly love, family, friendship and selfless concern for others. So important were these values to our faith that the Temple par excellence embraced those values as the very foundation of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem!

The lesson of this simple, but powerful story is not lost on us today. As a men’s club we embark on countless mitzvot to help our Temple. From the giving of Torah crowns, to camp scholarships, to ushering at High Holydays and the building of our succah (and the list goes on!) we know that our primary mission is to help keep our Temple strong. Through our dedication and love of each other we find comradery and a devotion to Judaism. I am so proud of the work that our Men’s club does, and fill blessed that we have one of the strongest men’s club in the U.R.J.. Through hard work and devotion you continue to plants seeds of love and caring for generations yet to come. And after all isn’t this the true meaning of brotherhood?
